Rector
Glenn Chalmers arrived on May
1, 2009, to serve as the 14th Rector of Holy
Apostles and Executive Director of the Holy Apostles Soup
Kitchen.
His service in the parish is an extension of his experience
and commitment to urban ministry. From living with the
Catholic Worker community in his 20’s, to recently leading a
diocesan agency for the homeless, Glenn continues to be
energized by faith communities committed to ministry in the
midst of the city. “Holy Apostles,” he says, “is
one of those places that dare to live out its faith and
raise the hard questions – it walks the talk.”
His prior experience included being Vicar of Grace
Church, Elizabeth, New Jersey: a vacant inner city parish
that drew a congregation and launched outreach programs
making it one of the first Jubilee Ministry centers in the
Episcopal Church. At Episcopal City Mission in Boston,
Glenn was involved in efforts to support parishes and
community organizations engaging underserved and
marginalized communities. As Rector of Grace Church,
Lawrence, Massachusetts, he developed a Spanish speaking
service and outreach ministries geared to families and
children. Most recently, he was Executive Director of
Cathedral Shelter of Chicago which primarily operates
residential programs for homeless individuals and families.
Glenn is the father of three children: Abby, 21, with whom
he lives; Aaron, 19; and Aster, 16. While he doesn’t expect
the opportunity to rise again, he would not re-name three
children with the same letter of the alphabet.
Glenn grew up across the Hudson in Little Falls, New
Jersey. He is a very proud ‘Jersey Boy,’ having also
received his Master of Divinity from Princeton Seminary and
Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers. More recently,
he earned a Doctor of Ministry from the Graduate Theological
Foundation. He is very glad to be ‘back home,’ and in a
parish community whose values and journey speak powerfully
to his own.
