Title: Annunciation; Date: 1898; Artist: Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937); Building: Philadelphia Museum of Art; Object/Function: Painting; City/Town: Philadelphia; State: PA; Country: United States; Scripture: Luke 1:26-38, Luke 1:46b-55. Notes: Henry Ossawa Tanner was the first internationally acclaimed African American artist. His art reflects the influence of the AME church, his father, and his own views on race and education. This painting displays Mary seated upon her bed in modest, peasant clothing with her hands clasped in her lap. She gazes timidly at the angel Gabriel—represented by the bright column of light at the right side of the piece. The viewer can feel the nervous anxiety as Mary listens to the (good) news the angel brings. In light of this daunting news, one may stand in awe of Mary’s reported reply: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Permalink: https://diglib.library.vanderbilt.edu/act-imagelink.pl?RC=54838 (Use this link to refer back to this image.)
