Title: Baptism of Christ; Date: 1470-1475; Artist: Andrea del Verrocchio (1435?-1488) & Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519); Building: Uffizi Gallery; Object/Function: Painting; City/Town: Florence; Country: Italy; Scripture: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22; Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:4-11. Notes: Andrea del Verrocchio was an Italian artist and master of a workshop in Florence. One of his pupils, the famous Leonardo da Vinci, is believed to have helped on this piece, Baptism of Christ. This painting portrays John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan River, baptizing a haloed Jesus. Two angels kneel in front of a palm tree while John pours the cleansing water on Jesus’ head. John holds a staff and a scroll that reads, “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.” God’s hands reach down from the opened heavens as a dove and rays of light reveal Jesus’ divinity.
