Title: The Canaanite Woman asks for healing for her daughter; Date: 1412-1416; Artist: Herman de Limbourg (approx. 1385-1416 approx.)-Jean de Limbourg (approx. 1385-1416 approx.)-Pol de Limbourg (approx. 1385-1416 approx.); Building: Musée Condé; Object/Function: Manuscript illumination; City/Town: Chantilly; Country: France; Scripture: Matthew 15:(10-20), 21-28, Mark 7:24-28. Notes: The Limbourg brothers, active in the early 15th century, were Dutch painters. They created the most well-known late medieval illuminated manuscript, the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. In this vibrant manuscript illumination of the Canaanite woman requesting healing for her daughter, we see a distraught mother pleading with Jesus for her daughter’s restoration. A scene with her sickly daughter lying on a bed populates the far right side of the page. In the upper panel, Jesus has his back turned to her, as the story tells us he initially refuses to help. In the bottom panel, Jesus has changed his mind and visibly acknowledges the woman as he grants her request. His healing activity is represented by the gold beams radiating from his face.
