At Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, we know it takes a village to feed our community and our volunteers know that better than anyone. Our dedicated team of volunteers are the crucial backbone of our operations: they pack lunches and groceries for our guests, hand out food to those who visit us, and it is because of them that we have been able to continue our mission and never miss a single day of meal service in our nearly 40-year history.
Volunteers Zung and Kevin are two consistent members of our team. Zung first volunteered for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen 15 years ago while she was searching for her first job after completing school. When Kevin retired in May 2021, he decided to start volunteering at the Soup Kitchen where Zung had worked all those years ago. When Zung retired in July, she joined him, and they’ve been coming to volunteer together ever since.
For Kevin and Zung, what makes the Soup Kitchen so special is the community. They’ve both befriended the great people that volunteer here, and Kevin reflected on the importance of the mission: “to feed the hungry, take care of the homeless, and take care of those that can’t take care of themselves.” Zung agreed, sharing that while the outside world can be dark, it’s refreshing to be a part of a beautiful community full of kindness.
At Holy Apostles, we know our volunteers and donors are essential in allowing the Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry to continue responding to the most pressing needs of our shared community. We’re thankful for the partnerships we’ve formed with all our volunteers, and for the ways in which we all work together to ensure that everyone is nourished.
When asked to describe Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry in one word, Kevin answered right away: “fantastic!” Zung paused and reflected for a moment, and then shared: “beautiful.” We’re so appreciative of the hard work of Kevin and Zung, and all our volunteers.
