We are continuing to share beloved prayers from our Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Today’s prayer for Quiet Confidence is from Patrick Murray. It can be found in the Prayers and Thanksgivings section of the BCP, pp. 814-841.
O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(BCP, p. 832)
Patrick writes: “Probably not the most favorite prayer but certainly the one that keeps coming to me in the times that we are in. I find myself at times becoming angry at the world we live in and by those that want to be God. Leaders of religious groups condoning these efforts for personal gain. It just becomes too much for me at times. And then, I read this prayer and in particular ‘in quietness and confidence will be our strength.’ So I stop, gather my thoughts and know there is only one God, there is only one source of strength I can rely on, there is only one answer to everything…. ‘Quiet Confidence,’ stay still, connect with God, and there I find the strength to carry on. Thanks for reaching out and asking us to submit our favorite prayer and why. It reminds that the answers are in that book and not the newspapers.”
Amen!
