A Prayer for Reliance on God | The Rev. Susan E. Hill, Associate Rector

06.26.26 | Celebration, Community, International, Pulpit Posts, World

We are continuing to share favorite prayers from our Book of Common Prayer (BCP). If you have a special BCP prayer you’d like to recommend, please let me know! ([email protected])

Today’s prayer is one of the “collects” that we use to begin our Sunday worship. A whole array of these collects, in traditional as well as more contemporary versions, can be found in the BCP, pp. 159-261. The following is used on the Sunday closest to September 21:

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP, p. 234)

The parishioner who offers this prayer writes: “This prayer comforts me when I’m feeling worried or upset, reassuring me that the ‘changes and chances’ of life always pass, but God is eternally present for us.”

Amen!
