Over the next few months we will regularly share favorite prayers from our Book of Common Prayer (BCP). If you have a favorite you’d like to recommend, please let me know! ([email protected]g)

Today’s prayer, a Prayer of St. Chrysostom, is from John Sandercock, and it can be found at the end of the Morning Prayer service, Rite II, pp. 75-102 of the BCP:

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. (BCP, p. 102)

John says: “I love the promise that when two or three are gathered in Jesus’ name, God will be in the midst of them. It validates our small prayer groups and encourages us to continue even though the numbers remain small. It also feels right because one can sense the presence of God in such a group. I also like the request to fulfill our desires and petitions ‘as may be best for us’ which I take as a humble acknowledgement that not everything we ask for in prayer is appropriate or granted.”

This is also particularly good prayer to pray as we continue to walk with Jesus through Holy Week and into Eastertide. May you find blessings through your journey!
