For Her Granddaughter – Meet Mildred

You helped Mildred provide a stable home during a tough time

If you’ve ever had a growing child in your house, you know what it’s like. They need plenty of good, nourishing food, of course. But they also seem to outgrow their clothes and shoes every few months. There’s always something.

That’s why Mildred needed extra help taking care of her granddaughter. When Mildred’s daughter couldn’t care for her little girl, Mildred took her in — like thousands of grandparents all across our country and many of our food pantry guests. She could offer her granddaughter a stable home life. But because Mildred was living on disability income herself and getting no financial help from other sources, money was tight.

New Yorkers are nothing if not determined, and Manhattan-born Mildred, now living in the Bronx, knew where to look. She knew that thanks to your support, at our food pantry she’d get the kind of groceries she needed. “They give more different things here,” she says. “They give milk and eggs. They give meat, too, like fish. In some places, they don’t do that.”

“I appreciate the people who work here. They’re very friendly and considerate.”

With that help, Mildred was able to give her granddaughter the nutrition she needed to grow up strong. Now that her granddaughter is living with her mother again, Mildred still comes in for some groceries and welcoming faces. She misses her little girl, so, “I appreciate the people who work here,” she says. “They’re very friendly and considerate.”

When Mildred took in her granddaughter, you helped them both thrive.

Thank you for helping grandparents like Mildred step in when their grandkids need support!
