Jesus Before All Else | The Rev. Canon Robert A. Jacobs, Deacon

06.19.26 | Celebration, Community, International, Pulpit Posts, World

In Matthew’s Gospel chapter 10, Jesus speaks words that are both challenging and encouraging. He tells His disciples that if they follow Him, they should not expect to be treated better than He was. If Jesus faced rejection, criticism and suffering, His followers may face the same. Discipleship is not always easy. Faithfulness to Christ often requires courage.

Yet Jesus repeatedly says, “Do not be afraid.” He reminds us that God sees and knows us completely. Not even a sparrow falls to the ground apart from the Father’s care, and are we not worth far more than many sparrows. In a world filled with uncertainty, fear, and pressure, Jesus calls us to trust that we are held securely in God’s hands.

Then Jesus speaks about commitment. He says that whoever loves father or mother, son or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him. These words are not a command to love our families less; they are a call to love Christ first. When Jesus is first in our lives, every other relationship finds its proper place. Our love for family, friends, and neighbors becomes stronger and more faithful because it is rooted in Him.

Jesus also tells us to take up our cross and follow Him. The cross represents sacrifice, obedience and trust. Each of us carries crosses, difficult responsibilities, personal struggles, disappointments, or sacrifices made for the sake of faith. Jesus does not promise a life free from burdens, but He promises His presence as we carry them.

The Gospel ends with a powerful paradox: “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The world teaches us to hold tightly to our own desires and ambitions. Jesus teaches us that true life is found in surrender. When we give ourselves to God, we discover the purpose, joy and peace for which we were created.

Today, Christ asks us a simple but profound question: is He first in our lives? May we answer with faith, courage, and trust, knowing that whatever we give up for Him can never compare to the life He gives in return.
