Pentecost | The Rev. Canon Robert A. Jacobs, Deacon

On Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost, 50 days after Easter, as it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Pentecost reminds us that God does not leave His people powerless, afraid, or alone.

In Acts 2, the disciples were gathered together, uncertain about the future after Jesus’s Ascension. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit came upon them like a rushing wind and tongues of fire rested upon each of them. In that moment, ordinary people were transformed into bold witnesses for Christ.

Pentecost teaches us three important truths.

First, God keeps His promises. Jesus told His disciples that He would send a Comforter, and He fulfilled that promise through the Holy Spirit. The same God who was faithful then is faithful now. When life feels uncertain, we can trust that God still guides, strengthens, and provides for His people.

Second, Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit gives us power to live differently. Before Pentecost, Peter denied Jesus out of fear. After receiving the Holy Spirit, Peter stood before crowds and boldly preached the gospel. The Spirit empowers believers with courage, wisdom, and love. We may feel weak or inadequate, but through God’s Spirit we can overcome fear, forgive others, serve faithfully, and share hope with the world.

Finally, Pentecost shows us that the church is meant to unite people. On that day, people from many nations heard the message of God in their own language. The Holy Spirit broke barriers of culture, race, and background. God’s desire is for His people to live in unity and reflect His love to everyone.

Today, Pentecost still speaks to us. It calls us to open our hearts to the Spirit of God, to live boldly for Christ, and to become instruments of peace and hope in a divided world. The same Spirit that moved in the upper room is still moving today, calling believers to faith, purpose, and transformation. May we not simply remember Pentecost as an event in history but experience its power in our daily lives. Amen.
