Self-Denial | The Rev. Canon Robert A. Jacobs

09.13.24 | Celebration, Community, International, Pulpit Posts, World

In our world today, the idea of bearing a cross can seem distant and abstract. We don’t literally carry heavy wooden beams on our back as we navigate our daily lives. The essence of Jesus’ command remains as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. It’s about self-denial, about putting God’s will before our own.

When we consider the life of Jesus, we see a model of self-sacrifice that is unparalleled. He gave up His heavenly throne to walk among us, to experience our joys and sorrows, our triumphs and failures. He lived among us, not as a “KING”, but as a humble servant.

The act of self-sacrifice is about finding our true purpose. It’s about putting the needs of others before our own. This is not an easy path to walk. It requires courage, humility giving of oneself and above all, love.

Jesus who loved us so much that He was willing to lay down His life for us. He was willing to endure the cross.

When we choose a life of self-sacrifice we are choosing to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We are choosing to walk a path that is often difficult and challenging, but also deeply rewarding. We are choosing to live a life that is not centered on ourselves, but on others. We are choosing to live a life that is not about acquiring wealth or power as some do, but about serving others.

This is not a path for the faint of heart but rather requires strength, courage and determination. It requires a willingness to put aside our own desires and ambitions, to put the needs of others before our own. Something we all need to do to make this world a better place, not just for ourselves but for everyone.
