Spotlight on our Meal Outreach Program

05.7.21 | Food for the Soul, Uncategorized

Last week, our team at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen joined Derrick, our Meal Outreach specialist, on one of his runs to deliver sandwiches to those in need. Derrick brings breakfast and lunch sandwiches to New Yorkers on the streets and in Penn Station every weekday. For many of our unhoused neighbors, making the journey to the Soup Kitchen is a risk they can’t take. They aren’t always able to carry all their belongings back and forth between where they’re sleeping and where they have access to a meal, causing them to have to choose between staying safe and having shelter, and eating on any given day.

Derrick makes all the difference for these individuals, by delivering sandwiches directly to them, wherever they are. When we were out with Derrick, he was distributing his famous tuna sandwiches and one guest told us that Derrick’s tuna was the best tuna sandwich in New York City. Having access to nutritious, delicious meals makes a world of difference for everyone, especially our unhoused guests.

Derrick also brings along socks, toiletries, and other essentials during his deliveries—making sure we meet the basic needs of our guests across the board.
