Volunteer Corner – Meet Maureen

04.29.24 | Food for the Soul, Volunteer Stories

“I believe that you should give back,” Maureen says, and she means it.

After retiring from a successful career in business and a stint with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Maureen jumped into volunteering with both feet. In fact, she is one of our volunteer-donors, those  who support Holy Apostles financially too.

Maureen is here twice a week to pack up food for our guests to take with them. Other days, she works with people who are experiencing early memory loss and volunteers in various roles at her church. “I love volunteering here,” she says. “I really enjoy coming down. It’s a nice group of people to work with, and the people coming through are so appreciative.

She connected with a Ukrainian family and rejoiced with them when the oldest son got into college. Another guest has also touched her heart. “There’s a woman who comes in. She’s always looking for diapers or cat food, and she’s taking care of her mother.” Maureen can relate because she cared for her own mother through the end of her life.

“When I see her coming, I just know that it’s hard for her, and wonder if she has anybody to share that with.”

Maureen and our other warm-hearted volunteers help make sure our guests do have someone to share the hard times with and practical support to get them through.

Thank you, volunteers!
